What did Memorial Day mean to you as a child?

We cleaned and decorated the cemetery the week before.
Decorated our bikes - red white and blue.
Parade from fire station to cemetery about 3/4 mile
Kids on bikes
Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, Brownies and Cub Scouts.
Church groups singing
School band
Retired veterans headed the parade (in their uniforms that really did not fit anymore)
Shots were fired over graves
People picniced and enjoyed their families and remembered the ones that had passed.

  • As a child - nothing, it was just a day out of school. My mom usually had to work her second job on holidays. So I just hung around the house with my brothers.

  • Nothing, we were usually already out of school and my parents never did anything special for the holiday because we lived pretty far away from any family cemetery. I don't remember any parades or anything like that. Now, our community doesn't have a parade and most of our scout troops are done with meetings before Memorial Day. Our troop meets year round, but we don't do anything for the holiday.

  • I am so sad that there were not others that have the memories of the meaning of the day.
