DVD Recorder

I was in Best Buy the other day talking with one of the workers about how I still have a boat load of VHS movies and he said that I could use a combo VHS/DVD recorder and record the VHS tales onto a DVD. Is he right? I always figured there would be a block not allowing you to do that.
