How old was your child when he/she slept over at a friend's house for the first time?

My daughter was 3 when she slept across the street at her friend's house. She is 6 now and some of her friends are not quite ready for sleep-overs yet, so I'm wondering how common that is.

  • I would not allow my kids to stay over at a frend's house until they were about 8 or 9. Both of my girls spent the night at grandma's long before they stayed with friends. We didn't have sleepovers at our house until 2nd or 3rd grade and I won't take girls for overnighters with Girl Scouts without a parent until 2nd grade.

  • My oldest was a couple weeks shy of her 5th birthday. She spent the entire week at her BFF's house (next door) because we were moving to another state. Funny thing was me and the girl's mom were both like, "why didn't we think to do this before," lol. My middle daughter was 8. She never had a close friend to stay over at before that. My 9yo son never has. He wets the bed and is too self-conscious about his pull-ups. His choice. My 5yo dd hasn't because she hasn't found any really close friends yet. She had 1 but the girl was only here every other weekend visiting her dad and we didn't want to impede on his limited time. It was bad enough she was at our house most of the weekend playing anyway. They moved, though. Her other friend has a dog and it scares my 5yo. She won't even go in her house but plays in her yard all the time.

  • Mine hasn't had any sleepovers (our oldest is 6 1/2). We don't have any friends that we know well enough to feel comfortable with this, so I don't expect this to be happening for another couple years. I will need to know the family/parent(s) well before I let the kid(s) sleep overnight. I'm a paranoid parent though.

  • I'd say uncommon, my 4 year old won't even sleep in her own bed yet.
