Baby Bunny Nest

We found a baby bunny nest under DD's slide in our back yard. Our inside/outside cat started to dig them up and so he is now locked in the house until mama either moves them or they are old enough to leave themselves.  We covered them back up before leaving them alone for mama bunny to take care of them.

So...how long does it take for them to be old enough to leave the nest themselves? Right now they are maybe three inches long and doesn't seem to have their eyes open yet.

  • Mama rabbit won't abandon those babies, even if you touch them. If you leave your cat back out ... THAT might run her off. If their eyes aren't open yet they are under two weeks old. By 4 weeks they will be out and about, and by 8 weeks will be half grown and on their own. Mama will gradually wean them between 6 and 8 weeks. If you want, you can put out pieces of apples, orange slices, carrot, etc. (NO lettuce). It will help mama produce more milk. A pan of water each day would also be good ... but, try and balance that with not really getting them used to being fed too much. Kudos for leaving them be!

  • Just to warn you, the mama might smell the cat on the nest, or even smell you guys on it, and will abandon them. At least that's what I've always heard, I may be wrong.

  • Keep an eye on them. A bunny made a nest in our yard where the dog area is and then she abandoned them...they all died. Very sad.
