Question about Garnishments

My soon to be husband has a standing garnishment but isn't currently employeed. When we do get married can they garnish MY check or can they only garnish him?

  • only him. Unless whatever the debt is,is in your name too? Otherwise they can't touch you

  • But they can get into a bank account that is joint. I would have your own untill the debt is gone. Just to be safe

  • i am not sure about everything. but, i do know that with childsupport they will garnish the wives. around taxes.

  • They cannot garnish your wages. The only thing you can lose money on is if the debt is in your name to, a joint bank account, or if it is child support, they can take a joint tax return refund, and you would then have to file an injured spouse claim to get your portion of it back. But they cannot touch your paycheck.

  • They cannot touch your paycheck, but they can order him to get a job and start paying or they can take away his license or put him in jail.
