How do sinus infections work?Is it usually a cold that has progressed to this level or what?

And if it is from an initial that contagious?
And if its NOT a cold..then is the sinus infection itself contagious?

I know..I probably sound stupid but my brain isnt' working, lol.
I'm seriously confused about this!
I've never had to deal with sinus infection problems before.

  • There are many causes to sinus infections. Usually it happens because the sinuses cannot drain properly due to inflammation. This can be caused by colds or allergies. It is not usually contagious. It is bacterial not viral.

  • Sinus infections can be contagious. We just passed something around in our house the past week or so. Doc said all was sinus related that led to ear infections for a couple of my kids.

  • I just read earlier today that some sinus infections are actually a fungus infection and that's why antibiotics don't clear them up like the do the bacterial kind.
