Your opinion--"gift certificate" for a bike?

Okay, so, my SD hasn't been able to be with us for Christmas for 3 years (4 this year if we don't see her). We are doing a "Christmas in July" for her this summer. We have the presents we already got her, but she outgrew the bike we had here (plus it rusted--we are in Japan and it's very humid), so we were thinking of also giving her a "certificate" for her to pick out her new bike when she's here (She's kind of hard to figure out what she likes, semi-girly, semi-tomboy. lol). Does that sound like an idea an 8.5 year old kid would like, or should we just pick one and hope that she likes it? We don't want her stuck with something she doesn't like...And she'll be keeping this one for a while.

  • I would let her pick. Partly for sizing. Depending on height you may be able to get he a larger bike that will last longer vs. a smaller on that will only last a little while.

  • Letting her pick is the way to go, but unwrapping a gift certificate is underwhelming, at best.

Perhaps buy a bike accessory - the helmet, a cool bell/horn, pedal clips, streamers, bike basket, personalized bike plate, something like that - to unwrap, that leads to the excitement of the bike.

Do a little preshopping, so you know where to go and which bikes to steer towards (unless you want to go carte blanche on selection!), but I think at 8.5 you are right that you want to get kids to "try on" the bike (and picking color/style is a nice bonus!).
