How do i get my baby to take a nap...?

I have a 4month 3week & 6day old baby who doesn't seem to like sleeping...he'll go to bed around 9pm and wake up around 330am then again at 5am and stay up all day with small cat naps that seriously only last 5-15minutes long... then he's cranky the rest of the time...what can i do to help him get more sleep and to be less cranky?

  • A routine always helped mine - wake him up at the same time every morning, then try to "schedule" naps around when he's tired - or before. Babies that are overtired generally have a very hard time settling down for long restful sleeps.

  • he was doing well on his schedule before then for some reason he wasn't feeling well & couldn't fall back on his schedule...so now he's suffering as well as me... & his older brother... I just didn't know if there was anything i could do besides that

  • You said he fell off the schedule when feeling sick one day, that now that he's fine you have to implement the schedule again, be consistent! Wake him at the same time every morning. Lay him down for a nap at the same times every day even if he does not want to. Let's say you wake him at 7:30, lay him down at 11am, then again at 3pm then down to sleep at 8 for the night. Even if he doesn't fall asleep he'll get use to the routine and will sleep when at his designated times. Don't let him detour from it. Let's say you lay him down for his first 11am nap and he doesn't fall asleep until 12:15 but you were suppose to wake him at 12:30, wake him up at 12:30 anyway. It's gonna be tough but thats the adjustment period and I guarantee you if you stick to it he will get very use to it quickly. GL
