Sippy Cups

When do you think that a child should no longer be using a sippy cup? We use cups at all meals when we are sitting at the table. Our 4 year old has not used a sippy cup since he was two he uses the straw style.

We have carpet throughout so we try to make them sit at the table when drinking from a regular cup otherwise my 4 year old uses a straw style cup we had no problems breaking him of the sippy cup because his older brother was using a regular cup and he wanted to also.

I was wondering what you other moms do and what age did your child stop using a sippy cup altogether?

  • My 4th child is 2 and we are cutting back on sippy cups. My older kids are only allowed to have drinks in the kitchen, and that will go for him as well. I plan to have him completely off sippys (including ones with straws) by his 3rd bday.

  • My daughter is 4 and still insists on a sippy for her morning milk. I'm not in the mood for a fight about that right now. For drinks when she's playing, I put it in a straw cup most of the time, but if she wants an open cup, I deal with it, but I have to nag her to put it somewhere safe in between sips. At meals, we use open cups. BTW, I have hardwood floors, so spills aren't as big a deal as they would be if we had wall-to-wall carpet.

  • Well my 3-1/2 year old uses regular ones and sippy cups. More often sippy cups are used when we are on the go, just easier for me I guess.. He usually picks what he wants to drink from loL!~ weird thing to have a voice about but he likes to pick it as part of dinner -

  • My 4 yr. old uses a sippy cup for her nightly cocoa. At meals she uses a regular cup, at restaurants a cup w/a lid and straw.

  • DD never used a sippy. She went from bottle to normal cup or straws. She never sucked a sippy correctly.

  • My son is 4 1/2 and still uses a sippy cup. We are going to work on a regular cup this summer since we will be outside a lot. He has Down syndrome and because of his low muscle tone its hard for him. He has a hard time with straw cups too but he can use them, he just won't.

  • We've been using straw type cups since my daughter was a year old, but had the now spill type. Since she was 2 1/2 yr. we've been using the regular straw cups & my daughter just turned 4 last week. Occassionally I let her use a regular cup but I don't want the spills, especially with MILK!! She always drinks from my cup anyyway so I know she can do it, but kids are clumsy & knock cups over. I got her over actual sippy spout cups as soon as she mastered the straw.
