Is Christianity teaching intolerance?

Basic principles of Christianity: homosexuality is a sin, not believing in God earns you a fast ticket to Hell, others beliefs might be "respected" but they are really silly and just fooling themselves because God is the one and only true God.

from these teachings i can only gather that; Christianity teaches bigotry, homophobia, and intolerance.

thoughts?

  • Christianity doesn't. Christians do (and lets get the disclaimer right up front for those who have displaced their big girl panties SOME NOT ALL).

  • You are free to gather what you choose. Shall we also dismiss the Bibles teaching in other areas...to help the poor..take care of our neighbor...don't kill? Bashing Christians as bigots and homophobes is only an attempt to make you feel better about your decision to discard the teachings you do not agree with...your attempt to tell yourself that it is the Bible the Christians that are wrong..not yourself.

  • We must disagree on what the BASIC teachings of Christianity are.

The Basic teachings are: people are fallen, and the atonement of Christ has the power to redeem us from that fall.

Every other teaching is an axillory to that basic teaching of the atonement...as others have pointed out, denominations can differ greatly, this is the basic teaching they all have in common.

  • This is what you gather, but your conclusions are incorrect and no where close to being the truth. However, you are entirely free to believe your conclusions, and I will not debate those with you.

  • You hit the nail on the head, NP. Christianity is far too diverse to put a label on what everyone is taught.

I think the better statement would be, many people have used the teachings of Christianity to justify bigotry, homophobia, and intolerance, even if that's not what the teachings were intended for.

  • Nope, religion doesn't teach intolerance, people do.

  • Depends on which denomination/interpretation you follow, Let's say you follow those of Okmanders, Bandgeek etc- then my answer will be no. List a few others and that might change to a yes instead.

  • I think it depends on how you interpret the bible.
In my church we have a woman priest, and we haven't found any of those things in the bible.
I am Episcopalian, which is Christian.

  • In some branches yes others not so much. Most preach tolerance for other Christian groups, even if they don't teach it for other groups. Some however teach that even other denominations are wrong.

Last month the Catholic Church put out a new pamphlet about how to "convert witches." And I know I was always taught that anyone outside the JW religion was "following satan." So yes, intolerance is still taught. World wide it's even worse, in Africa they are still burning "witches" in the name of Christ.

But for every example of how intolerance is taught, there are just as many of how Christianity teaches to embrace your fellow man, care for the poor and love everyone. So what it comes down to is the denomination and clergy you have and of course, what you choose to follow.
