High fashion or fishing lure?

Fly fishing shops nationwide are at the center of the latest hair trend: Feather extensions. Supplies at stores from the coasts of Maine to landlocked Idaho are running out and some feathers sold online are fetching hundreds of dollars more than the usual prices.

"I'm looking around the shop thinking hmmm, what else can they put in their hair?" Bernstein said.

Fly fishermen are not happy, bemoaning the trend in online message boards and sneering at so-called "feather ladies." Some also blame "American Idol" judge and rocker Steven Tyler, who began wearing the feathers in his long hair.

  • I've been wearing feathers in my hair and on my head long before this became a trend. Of course feather headdresses are part of my culture. I'm not quite sure what I think about it becoming so mainstream now though.

  • I like them when they're done right. My 60 something yr old mom has red ones in her dark redish brown hair. My friends run a fly fishing guide company and the husband buys feathers for flies and the wife buys them to sell for hair in her online boutique. The husband doesn't care because they buy them together and are able to get a better price for buying twice as much as they would just for making flies. I don't think they started with Steven Tyler though since my friend was selling them in her boutique a while before this season of American Idol. She saw them at a fashion show she went to with her SIL.

  • i read that article too...i found it really sad that the chickens end up being euthanized because they dont usually survive the plucking of their feathers...wonder how many vegans/vegetarians are walking around wearing a dead chicken's feathers in their hair...
