Anyone had surgery to correct TMJ?

I've had is for years. My jaw has always sublexed when I open my mouth.
Recently, it started to hurt really bad and now I can't open my mouth very wide. I went into the er today and the doctor said he thinks it will dislocate. He stated sublexing is an indication that it will dislocate. But it's been doing it for probably 10+ years. He said it's not locked yet, but it could also do that. He told me to see an oral surgeon to get it corrected.

Not a big fan of surgery. So was just hoping to get some details.

  • A friend of mine had her jaw broken and wired shut for six weeks to correct it. Doesn't seem like fun to me.

  • Yes, I am going to see my primary on Monday. I am hoping it's just a surgery happy ER doctor. But we will have to do something so I can open my mouth. The meal plan isn't very good like this. :)

  • I was hoping for surgery but instead I have to wear a special retainer all the time. I hate it.

  • Yep, they gave me the retainer also. And I have never really had an issue with it until now. Minor pain sometimes, but nothing like this.

  • I wore a retainer for about 18 months to correct it. It did wonders.
