What is considered a good amount of calories to burn in a single workout?

  • The treamil I just got has a workout that says 300 and one that says 400 in 30 mins.
    That scared me to death!
    I usually burn between 100 - 130 in 30 mins on thr treadmil, but I'm just begining. Need to lose about 20 pounds.

  • It really does depend on the things the first person much you want/need to lose, how much you weigh, age, height as to how many you will burn.. the key is keeping at least a 500 calorie deficit daily as one pound of fat contains 3500 cals, you need to burn at least 3500 cals per week to lose 1 lb of fat.

    Now, I am 5'1", and roughly 110-115 lbs depending on the day/week. I only burn about 250 cals doing P90X 6 days per week, and I can run 3 miles and only burn 260-280 calories. Typically, someone that weighs 150 lbs will burn 100 calories per mile...I weigh significantly less than the average and so I burn much less than I did when I started my journey in 12/09.

  • Everyone is different but a burn of 250+ is good. I'm doing Insanity and I wear a bodybugg, in the first month I was burning in the range of 350-420 a workout, in Month 2 i'm burning about 500-640 a workout.

  • Start out slow. If you're just beginning, 150-200 calories per workout should be fine for the first week. Try working up more to the 350-400 calorie range, though. You don't necessarily have to do that in just thirty minutes. Maybe it takes you 40-45 minutes to burn that much? If you're trying to lose weight, then working out 4 times a week and burning 400 calories every time is going to help you out a lot! That is burning off an additional 1600+ calories! Not to mention the good it is doing for your heart and body and mind! If you add that with a 500 calorie per day food deficit, you will see the steady, healthy weight loss you want of 1-2lbs a week. :-)

  • For me I like to burn between 700 and 800 calories per work out. But that is a lot easier for me to do since I do weigh 177 pounds. Someone weighing less would have to work out a lot longer or harder to burn that much.

    My goal is to burn an extra 1000 calories a day. Which is so hard to do. The other day I did a 7 mile jog, then a 1.5 mile walk and I was barely over 1000. I can't imagine how hard it's going to be as I get closer to my goal weight. Some days I break it up and do 2 works outs. Or 1 hard work out and one easy one... or something like that.
