Have you moved across the country or state to state with a family?

Did you sell your house first and then rent, sell and buy right away? What challenges did you have? Did you move your stuff yourself or use a company like Pods? Mind sharing how much it cost to physically move your stuff?

  • I sold my house on the west coast, we loaded everything into a huge uhaul and drove across country to the east coast where we rented for 10 years before finally being able to buy a home. Cost of uhaul, gas for uhaul and car, motel rooms each night, plus food cost us I think around $4000.

  • We bought our house first and then sold our old one. We used a moving company. Even when we first got married, we used a moving company. You can lessen the cost of a moving company by packing yourself but having them move the boxes and furniture and drive the truck. It was worth it for us. We considered renting first for a year when we made this last move, but then we'd have to go through the expense (and PAIN) of having to move twice.

  • We put our house on the market then took a trip to new location and made an offer on a house contingent on us selling our house back home. Our home sold before we needed to move so we rented a small place until we moved. We used a moving company to move our household.
