1 John 5:19 What's the interpretation of this text?

Does it say that Satan is the "ruler" of the humans on this earth?

  • The Bible indicates that at this present time the world is not under God's dominion, but is in rebellion against his rule and is enslaved to Satan. 2Co. 4:4 says that Satan is the god of this age.

  • "while the world, who doesn't do as the bible says, or is not trying to be holy, is lying in wickedness...they're sinners"

    ALL people are sinners.

  • Those that are of God are the believers .... those that are not are of the world... the ruler of the world is satan over them. That is what it is saying.
Here is The Message: 1 John 5:19

    The Message (MSG)

18-21We know that none of the God-begotten makes a practice of sin—fatal sin. The God-begotten are also the God-protected. The Evil One can't lay a hand on them. We know that we are held firm by God; it's only the people of the world who continue in the grip of the Evil One. And we know that the Son of God came so we could recognize and understand the truth of God—what a gift!—and we are living in the Truth itself, in God's Son, Jesus Christ. This Jesus is both True God and Real Life. Dear children, be on guard against all clever facsimiles

  • Short of translating directly from Hebrew or Greek, I like going to the Amplified when I want a little more about the connotations of the words used.

"We know [positively] that we are of God, and the whole world [around us] is under the power of the evil one."

My take on the verse, paraphrased, until we turn over control of our life to God, we are under the control of Satan.

  • 1 John 5:19And we know that we are of God, and the whole world lieth in wickedness

It means we are of God (His children), who are trying to live holy (Holy means perfect. God is perfect, he is holy. we are attempting to be like God, so we are attempting to be holy; perfect) while the world, who doesn't do as the bible says, or is not trying to be holy, is lying in wickedness...they're sinners

how did you come up with your definition?

  • ok yes we are all sinners...i didn't mean christians weren't...i should have elaborated on that. sorry. the people of the "world" (worldly, not trying to be holy, not trying to be like God) are walking on the wide road, toward hell, while we are walking on the straight and narrow, trying to be holy, like God. the "world" is living in wickedness...

and i'm reading the king james version. which one are you reading?

  • I think it depends how you interpret it, but some would interpret it that way. The Gnostics would believe it's referring to the Demiurge.

Looking up Gnosticism Demiurge would bring up some other sources if you want to read more about it, but here's one reference in a dictionary:

    Webster's Dictionary: Demiurge

A couple interpretations mentioned in the link above ^: "....The god of this world" is mentioned by Paul in 2 Corinthians 4:4; John states that "the whole world lies in the grip of the Wicked One" (1 John 5:19). While the Gnostics saw this as a reference to the Demiurge...opponents of Gnosticism held that creation has been subjected to Satan's rule through mankind's defection from the creator."
