4th or 5th grade "graduation" - silly or not?

I have a really hard time w/ the whole "graduation" thing from elementary school. Yes, acknowledge that the kids are moving on, but it has just all gotten to be too much. I just don't think moving from one elementary grade to another should be treated like a graduation.

  • Graduation at those levels only takes away from the ones that really mean something ... like high school or college.

  • If they are graduating from one school to another, why not celebrate?

  • I am PRO those types of "graduations"...it gives the children a sense of accomplishment and love. Shows them they DID IT and should be proud of themselves. And shows them if you work hard you are rewarded...:) I love it!

  • I've always felt that way too. I guess its more about "commencement" which by definition means the start of something.

  • I am looking forward to my son's 5th grade graduation. It is something that will be a huge accomplishment for him. He has worked very hard over the past several years. It is a milestone that is worth celebrating for us.

  • They don't do it here, but I think it would be kind of cute. Just some special little thing to say congratualtions on a job well done.

  • I think acknowledging the promotions are nice but a "graduation" with caps and gowns for anything other than high school and college is a bit over board.

I think a VERY modest acknowledgement/celebration is fine.

  • I see nothing wrong with a 'step up day' but the huge ceremonies are a little silly. When my DS graduated from Pre-K I had to by him a $30 gown! WHAT? Plus he had to have black dress shoes and black or navy dress pants and a collared shirt- which I also had to buy. His graduation from preschool cost me like $60! lol. A cute little play and paper hats would have been sufficient imo.
