Don't you have to be at least 100 lbs overweight to get gastric bypass surgery??

A FB friend of mine said she was going to get it but she doesn't look big enough to do it. Are they doing it on lower weight people now?

  • BMI and co-morbidities are how they determine if someone is a candidate for gastric bypass. 100 pounds on a 6 ft 6 inch tall person may not be enough to get them gastric bypass, but 100 extra pounds on a 5 ft tall woman certainly could do it. If someone's BMI is 35-40, in combination with type 2 diabetes, for example, they would qualify for the surgery in most health insurance plans. If their BMI is below 35, the patient usually needs fairly extreme circumstances to qualify. If their BMI is 40 or greater, they will likely qualify without having any other health conditions.

  • 41% BMI is a factor. If that is 60 lbs or 120 it is the BMI and health risk factors.

  • What I meant to say..was 41% and higher BMI is a key factor, as well as key factors for health risk.

  • Not if she has other risk factors, like a family history of Type 2 diabetes or heart disease.

  • I'm not putting bigger women down. I'm chubby as well, lol! i just didn't think they'd go it for that amount of weight. i thought it was more for "if you don't do this you'll be dead in a few years" scenarios.
