For those who have been to counseling

what was the best thing they taught you?
psychological counseling can cover a broad spectrum of ideas/conflicts by using a broad spectrum of techniques, so no matter what topic you so choose, please share!
for example
anxiety: visualization techniques ;)

  • Think it through. Think the entire thought out before acting on it. Whether it be sleeping with someone, using drugs because your an addict, THINK IT THROUGH all the way to the end and then you will see what the end result really is. If you act on impulse, this is a great tool to have.

  • That the only thing that separates most of us "crazies" is coping techniques. Learn valuable coping skills and you will be "normal". Normal people aren't always happy, but they know how to cope with not being.

  • im in cognitive therapy (no meds) right now for my anxiety, so far the best thing ive learned is to rationalize my way of thinking, and to write my emotions down and write down why i feel that way. humans in general are very irrational. also, suppressing feelings habitually for the benefit of someone else isn't healthy and they will eventually come out in other ways, which is part of the reason i suffer anxiety disorder.
