The tax industry has more employees that the five biggest employers among fortune 500 companies. That means they have more employees than Walmart, UPS, McDonalds, IBM and Citigroup COMBINED. The IRS also has more employees that the CIA and the FBI combined.
The Tax code is more than 9 million words long. The IRS estimates that we spend roughly 7.6 million hours a year dealing with the tax system. That is the equivalent of 4 million full time workers.

Is this a sudden and big change in the last 2 years, or has this arm of the government been bloated for a good long time? Certainly looks like a robust department.

It is ridiculous the IRS is so big. Also ridiculous someone like Geithner is running it.
