How can i make my almost 3 yo stop hitting others?

My 3yo keeps hitting everyone. We have tried time outs but they seem ineffective. What can i do to stop this behavior before he starts going to daycare again?

  • This morning my 4 year old was on the floor, wrapped around my 5 year old, like a monkey!!! I was litterally pulling him off, than he screamed when I placed him on "time out" on the couch... he just can't hold his temper... and I've caght our 5 year old pushing his buttons, so both are in the wrong... but I can't stop the train wreck of siblings too close in age?!?! PM me with any ideas, because I can use them!!!

  • I agree with MommaClark... If you figure this one out, let me know!! My almost 3 year old WONT STOP HITTING!!! I watch my nephew and foster my little cousin.. My son is constantly hitting them and my husband and me... We try time outs, taking things away, re directing him.... NOTHING is working!!! :( Hitting is something i will not tolerate so i just sit him in time out EVERY time he does it... He just gets up when time out is over and he does it again..

  • If he hits someone then try to talk to him but if he keeps on hitting people then put him on timeout.

  • If one of my kids hits another for no reason the sibling hits back. Sorry but if you are hitting you need to learn that there is a chance you are going to be hit back.

  • I h ave asked them why they need to hit...when I get the answer i take it from there. I also explain things like does mommy hit daddy? and they say "no" and take the conversation from there. They might be little but they do understand what adults are saying when talked to gently

  • Thank you all! i like all the suggestions... and the one about talking with the kids may work as well, but what if there is no daddy around? it's just me and the kids. daddies haven't been around since they were born
