  • Some basics

--Tap water (filtered if necessary) is cheap and very good for you. If you do juice, keep it watered down & not only cheaper but they don't get used to so-sweet tastes
--Switch to whole wheat pastas and brown rice. You can easily get on sale or in bulk. Work the same for kids.
--Beans are healthy and full of protein, and dirt cheap. Beans & rice is a great side. My 2 year old loves them (but not the others)
--Trading dessert for fruit salad is easy. Watermelon is cheap. Otherwise, fruit that's on sale (including cheap apples/oranges & put a sauce if you want, like vanilla pudding or a little whipped cream. Little kids love it just as much as anything else.
--2% cheese costs the same as regular
--We do get meat in larger quantities and freeze. Mine do eat meat. I serve nitrate-free turkey dogs
--Dried fruit (cranberries, cherries, raisins), wheat crackers, hummus as snack
--Trader Joes has lots of this stuff cheap

  • Oh, carrots are pretty cheap and tiny baby carrots or cut up cheaper big ones are great

Any prepared food you make yourself will have less salt and probably less fat & sugar

When you get a cheap, healthy food like beans, wheat pasta, chicken, huge bag o' peas or green beans, go to and put it in the ingredient search and it'll find recipes that use it with nutrition info. Great resource!
