About to be broke

dh and i had extra bills this month and a few of them we can't put off until next pay day. those few are the most expensive ones... after we pay bills, we will have less than 100 for groceries and gas for dh to get to and from work.
any ideas for making extra money? i have about 15 things listed on craigslist, we can't do a garage sale b/c we live in military housing and it isn't allowed. neither of us can donate plasma b/c dh just got home from iraq and i am bf-ing. idk what to do...we don't usually have financial problems, its just this one month that we will...
any advice is appreciated.

  • no, he makes $2 too much...lol crappy, i know. but this is truly the first month we've ever had a financial problem...we haven't been able to build up savings b/c of our bills, but we also have never had an issue...if that makes sense

  • craigslist is a good idea-- do you have a TV or a car you can't afford? Try to get rid of a few high dollar items to pay off debt that way you have more money month to month.
You might want to give Dave Ramsey's "Total Money Makeover" a try.
Also, if you are in the Army you can go to ACS (Army community service) and request a hardship loan. I'm sure the other branches have something similar.

  • If it's just the one time...can you ask family for a loan to see you through? I know some people have great luck with craigslist but I have horrible luck with it, so if we're hard up, I ask my parents for a small loan. Or maybe babysit for a few people a few times? Don't know if that's a possibility but it would be extra money.

  • Here's a question, do you have cable or satelite TV service? Do you belong to a movie rental club (like netflix or blockbuster)? Do you have high speed internet service? If you can answer yes to two or three out of three of these questions you may want to look at a combo of service that provide all needs at a lower cost or maybe eliminate (even if only temporarily) the service(s) you use least. This can either save a little money in the short run or lots of money in the long run. My family had all three. We found that we could get much of the same content we got from cable TV, across the internet from netflix (which we already belonged to) and free sites. This has saved us more then $50 a month. We were even able to reduce our internet service costs by negociating a new contract with the service provider that took advantage of a current deal they have.

  • i can't ask any family for money, unfortunately....they all have the money to loan, but it's just not something i can do. :( dh applied for an AER loan this morning, but they can't help us until we are actually out of money. as they said, they are a fixing business, not a prevention business...i've babysat for a friend a few times, but that's only going to get me about an extra $40, and they can't afford for me to babysit any more than that. a payday loan is out of the question. it is not a smart financial decision for us. the vehicles we have, we need. and sorry, but dave ramsey doesn't help people who just get by, he helps people who aren't wise with their money when they have extra to spend. we aren't wasting our money, we just had extra bills this one month...thanks for the suggestions tho, we're gonna try to figure it out...

  • we only have internet, not cable. we don't have netflix, we go to the library on post to rent dvd's and shows for free. we only have internet as an "extra". like i said, this is just a one time problem. we aren't constantly running out of money...so even if we did have cable, it wouldn't be an issue b/c normally we can afford extras like that.

  • Well, dave ramsey's program would have helped, because you would have an emergency fund set aside for times like this. Dave is not only good for people who are "bad" with money. No matter how much you make or how you are barely getting by, living below your means is very important.

  • It may be time to swallow your pride and ask someone in your family for a small loan.
