How do u get a 5 year old to want to learn how to write his abc's?

  • put some shaving cream on a cookie sheet and have him write the letters in the shaving cream, its messy and fun

  • Make it fun, not a chore. finger paints, I like the shaving cream idea, but at 5 he should be able to use a pencil well enough to do it.

  • Tell him/her that if they write it on paper then you will let them write the same letters in icing. Get a can of icing, wax paper and a ziplock sandwich bag or you can buy the disposable decorating bags at Walmart. Fill the bag with icing, clip the end and let them try it. You can scoop up the icing and put it back in the bag once they squeeze it all out trying to write with it.

    I do this at Scribble Cakes parties, kids love to write their names!

  • Practice, practice, practice.
    It is often a matter of developing those fine motor skills. Things that help with this are - playing with clay, tracing letters in shaving cream sprayed on a cookie sheet, picking up small objects with tweezers, etc.

  • Make it fun. Do it together. My son at 4 years old was writing his ABC's upper and lower case.
