What is the going rate for babysitting these days for a highschool'r?

Hi! I want to get a babysitter this weekend. She is 15 and is a sophomore in high school. I have never paid anyone to watch my 2 kids (I have a son who is 22 months & a 8 month old daughter) the only people who have watched my kids are family. I probably wouldn't even leave until I put the kids to bed for the night so it would be REALLY easy. I have NO idea what to pay her! HELP!

  • Well, when I was a babysitter in HS I used to get $10.00 an hour..but the lady whose kids I watched was pretty well off so she used to give me more if she was in a pinch..But $8-10 is good.

  • My teenage son babysits for a friend of ours and she pays him $13.00 per hour. He tried to give $3.00 back and they wouldn't take it. I'd say you can't go wrong with $10 - $13 per hour.

  • ask your friends and neighbors what they charge and do you buy her a pizza or something too eat and is she expected to clean the dishes and other stuff when she is there.

  • Minimum $10/hour. That's what the going rate is around here.

  • LMAO!!! I would never pay a sitter $10/hr. Sorry, but a 16 year old with a real job doesn't even make that much. I pay $3/hr for one kid if they're under 16, if they're over 16 I bump it up to $5/hr. For 2 kids I'd probably do $5/hr.

  • BTW - $10/hr is only 75 cents less than what I make an hour, and I am a pharmacy tech. So I think this really depends on your area. If you live in California or an expensive area, then maybe $10/hr is OK. But in my area - that would NEVER fly.

  • I usually give my niece (who is 18) $20 to watch my kids if it's just a few hours.

Answer by Anonymous at 11:38 AM on Dec. 12, 2008

  • Wow! That is alot of money per hour, especially with the economy the way it is.

  • Ha I get 20 dollars to watch my nieces if i'm lucky and im 17. No matter how long I watch them it's just 10 or 20 dollars.
