College No Longer Plays National Anthem

Goshen College will no longer play The Star-Spangled Banner at sporting events, school leaders announced, reversing last year's decision to allow the use of the national anthem for the first time in the Mennonite college's history.

Some Mennonites had criticized the anthem's lyrics as glorifying war and offensive to the school's pacifist traditions. Goshen's Board of Directors said many felt the school's "allegiance should be to Christ rather than to country." ~ Quoted Text

Does this go too far?? Are these the type of changes that are adversely affecting our youth???

  • Considering the fact that in the Bible, it says that you are supposed to go to war to fight for your country, I think they are wrong. Regardless, it is our National Anthem and it should be respected. The good thing is, we have a choice what college to attend, unlike your local public schools where you are stuck unless you choose another option.

  • Maybe they should just sing the last verse, since it uses the words "the war's desolation" and "in God is our trust."

  • ROFLMAO, you've obviously never been to Goshen College. It's the kind of place where coal in the right places would make you a lot of diamonds. They aren't corrupting a thing there, aside from occasionally a girl goes wild and wears pants instead of a skirt.

  • Is Goshen a private school?

They are a Christian school and they want their focus on Christ...what's wrong with that??

  • Apparently they never played it to begin with and then last year did so. They're just returning to their original position

  • To each their own... The playing of the National Anthem is a daily part of being a military spouse (played daily on base)... My kids run outside to put their hands on the heart and sing with pride at 5pm... I love it... They love it.. To each their own.

  • And btw, I don't know what idiot started this rumor that it was "banned for violence" but that's flat out untrue.  Here's the actual press release if anyone is actually interested:

  • From what I read here, that school didn't play it for most of its existence. It's just going back to where things were.
