Why do people walk on the road next to a perfectly good sidewalk?

I'm used to seeing kids and teens doing this, I don't know being rebellious or what. I've seen people do this in the winter when the sidewalks are not shovelled. But today on a beautiful summer day with clear sidewalks there's an elderly woman walking on the road. Why??? You are obstructing traffic!

  • Because the asphalt isn't as harsh on their joints.

  • Maybe it's hard for her to walk on the driveways as they slop up to the sidewalk.

  • I was going to add that too Simplicity. My mom has a very hard time walking up and down the driveway cut outs. She trips very easily.

  • reasons i choose not to walk on the sidewalk:
drivers block the sidewalk with their cars when they are in driveways
    sidewalks are broken and uneven
sidewalks are not wide enough for two moms and two strollers

  • I like the feel of the pavement not concrete under my feet,it just feels better on my joints. So don't run me over please when you see me walking in the road

  • I see that all the time too...extremely annoying! I have no idea why they do that, but walking in the road sure defeats the purpose of sidewalks...

  • I hate when teens do it. Also when they are on a bike but walking it down the middle of the road. Ugh...Don't get me started.

Answer by VintageWife at 12:50 PM on Jun. 17, 2011

  • I do it because of dogs. I learned that dogs will come out and growl/snap at someone walking near their property but not if the person is walking in the street. So, I walk in the street.
I really HATE dog owners who don't keep their dogs under control.
