Do I really need to wean him from the bottle at a year?

He uses a cup but he just likes the bottle still especially when he's tired or wants mommy time.
Can't I just let him choose when he wants to stop, within reasonable age boundaries?

  • Of course! My kids used it with water to fall asleep until almost 3. They gave it up when they were ready.

  • Honestly, I don't think it hurts anything for them to have a bottle a little longer. My son did, and no harm was done. The only thing I would advise against is not letting them have a bottle right before bed, so that the milk doesn't sit on their teeth.

  • You know what is best for your child.

I promise you he will not be packing his bottle when he goes off to college.
So if he stops at one or at two or even at three.... just love him and do well by him.
    He will be just fine.

  • You can do as you see fit, especially since you say he does well from a cup also. I'd try to limit the bottle though, as I believe it can affect jaw development.

  • I would try to wean him as soon as possible..... sucking that nipple is not good for their either.
