What do you pack in a backpack for an 11 y/o going on a plane alone?

I'm thinking portable dvd player w/movies, Ipod, notebook with pen for entertainment. Pretzels, sandwich, and some other snack (its a long flight) to eat. Maybe a sweater if she gets cold. What else????

  • Sounds about right. I'm sure she will be fine, the Unaccompanied Minor stewards are awesome with the kids. My son started about 11 and flew EVERY year to see his grandparents. She will enjoy herself!!

  • What airline is she flying? You may want to check to see if these items are allowed.

  • We are sending my 11 yr old on a non stop to Utah from Indy to visit grandparents. I am a little worried but think she'll have a great time. I am giving her money to watch the inflight movie and sending her DSI along for the trip.

  • I'm sorry if you took that as judgmental..I wasn't trying to be rude. I honestly wouldn't know what to pack because I just wouldn't be able to do it. I would sit at home and chew my nails off! lol. Worrying runs in my family! =)

Again.. I apologize if you thought I was mean!

  • We've done this with my son. He was happy with just his portable playstation. I think what you have is fine. Good luck!

  • I flew by myself the first time at 11. I packed my ipod, some pencil crayons and a pad of paper, go with a small blanket instead of a sweater in case she wants a nap. unopened prepackaged snacks since they won't allow anything open. portable dvd player or laptop with dvds. maybe some books? It all depends on the flight. A bottle of water or juice... handheld video games... anything packable that will amuse your kid. Cards?
