Can dogs eat human food?

I am a first-time pet owner so this is a serious question. We've had our dog about 5 years and he's always eaten Purina Beneful. My son put a raw baby carrot in the dog's dish today but I took it out. Can dogs have human food and if so, what kind?

  • Yes, dogs are omnivores and can eat just about anything we eat. They like a diet high in meat, so they'll eat that first, but veges are good. Just avoid giving him anything that's sweet or sugary, especially processed foods: no cake, candy or pastries etc. But leftovers including meat, pasta, rice, potatoes, and any kind of veges are fine. Oh, and NO chicken bones. Most bones are good for dogs to chew on, and help keep their teeth clean and health, but chicken bones (any bird bones) are inclined to splinter and can cause serious injuries to the dog's mouth and throat, and can even cause choking deaths.

  • Yes, dog food does have "human" food in it lol. There are many foods that are great for dogs like eggs and oatmeal and foods that are not like gum and chocolate. Google it and you will find some great info.

  • Our dog loves grapes, but won't touch left over steak. A little weird, but it has never bothered him. She's healthy.

  • They can, but it really isn't safe for a lot of foods. Processed meats, dairy, and of course chocolate are bad. Chocolate can actually kill them. Raw veggies are not safe either. Dehydrated, plain, lightly steamed are okay.

  • mine dosent eat our food all the time but sometimes as a treat if we have left overs on our plate not enough to put in fridge but enough were u dont want to throw it away..we will give it to her. but teach not to beg. we do it and get her to sit. also keep an eye on her if u have kids she will try and sneak the unsupervised plate. so when our dog eye balls a plate we do the noooo.....and she lays back down. as soon as we get up though shes like oh oh me me. but no bones. my dog is small and will wolf down a bone if she has the chance so i tell dh all the time dnt give her that. dont need her to choke. or have it in her poop were might cause damage on the way out.
