Is my kid a freak because her hands were open from day 1?

This is her on the day we arrived home, she's 4 days old.

I didn't know until recently that hands being open was a "milestone" or something. The Parents as Teachers lady who comes for my 3 yr old asked me how long her hands were open and she was only like 3 weeks old. I didn't know. I guess they were open from the beginning, apparently! Why is this a "thing"?

  • I've never heard of that. I don't know, but your baby sure is beautiful!

  • Thank you!! :) She's sure a mellow baby, too. Only squeaks when she's really tired, or if she has a burp.

  • Thanks!! I had a couple of other people ask me how long her hands were open, too. I just thought that sounded so funny, and I don't know why it was a "thing". If I remember right, big sis was the same way. I never noticed her hands balled up in little fists, even if I didn't know it was a "thing", I would have thought there was something wrong if they were.

  • i though it was just a normal reaction to close them, i'd say if her grasping reflex is good then it's fine. if she's not grasping you might want to talk to a dr. they are adorable btw!

  • I agree with the PP. If her grasp reflex is normal I wouldn't be to concerned. If the reflex is totally absent i may be more worried. I would suggest asking your dr. I watched a show on tv once where a infants hands were always open. The child ended up having a rare serious disorder (but i can't remember what it was). But the child did eventually develop other symptoms. The lack of grasping was the first sign. Not to worry you, just thought that info could be helpful.

  • most babies do clench their fists as a new born.. but it's not that uncommon to have them unclenched..

but your family is adorable. congrats :)

  • I agree with angevil and trinity about the grasping reflex. plus, I assume she's already seen her pediatrician? they would have noticed if that was a really big deal if you know what I mean... and i agree with everyone else as well, yall are gorgeous ;)

  • Thank you all!! Nope, I guess everything's fine, she has no problem grabbing things, especially my hair & her big sis's hair. :D I think I should video it when she gets big sis, I could be the next "Charlie bit my finger!" LOL!!
