How long does it take dry ice to melt.

I got some frozen food in the mail and it had a couple bags of dry ice in it. Says to keep it in the cooler until it melts. Does anyone know how long it might take for a couple pieces (about the size of a small romance novel) to melt?

  • Dry ice doesn't technically melt, it sublimates (goes directly into carbon dioxide gas from the solid). I think they probably want you to leave the dry ice in the cooler so that you aren't tempted to touch it, since you will seriously damage your skin if you do. If you leave the lid off the cooler, those two pieces will be gone by the end of the day.
