2 Bumps

This is probably a silly question for most of you, but this is my first baby. I got my blood taken for screenings of mental disabilities in the first and second trimester. Why don't they do them in the 3rd trimester?

  • Because by then the readings are inaccurate. The blood levels of hormones and substances are most accurate in the first and second trimesters and even then have a very, very high false positive rate.

  • You have the option to abort in the first trimester. And maybe even into the second, I'm not sure.

  • They already tested the baby for all they have the ability to test for through blood work . You could also have had an amnio which is always accurate for over 100 genetic abnormalities.

  • yes, it is too late to make a "choice" if they wait until the third trimester. There was never a "choice" for me so I refused the testing all together.
