  • K-9, as the PP have said is an abbreviation for Canine-the technical name for a dog. NOw in the police K-9 unit the majority of the dog are German Sheppard but that is not a 'rule'

  • k-9 is not a police dog....k-9 is just a general term for all dogs. It comes from the word Canine....

  • K-9 is simply a shortened form of the word canine which is the used to describe dogs because of the canine teeth. K9 originated in the military

  • K-9 IS a police dog; Canine is ANY dog! I have never seen K-9 used as an abbreviation for Canine! Usually it's German Shepherds, but Belgian Malinois, Dobermann Pinschers, Labrador Retrievers have also been used. Any medium-large breed of dog could be used in a K-9 police unit.

  • usually its a German Shepard... but honestly, any dog can be trained as a police k-9, as long as they are able to have a firm bite.

  • Canine came first, Canine teeth came after, It is the scientific name for a dog. Like Feline is the scientific name for a cat. It is probably Greek or Latin. Look up genius and species. Also look up the genius and species for a wolf to see how it compares.
