Can a 4 year old typically wipe their own butt?

I'm babysitting a 4 year old whose mother told me he has a speech delay from being deaf in one ear until big deal I thought. But I'm finding he can't even wipe his own butt when he goes to the bathroom. Is this normal? My DD is only 2 so we haven't reached that moment yet.

  • It depends on the child. My son couldn't wipe his own butt very good at 4. He was closer to 5 when he started doing that .

  • My DS is almost SEVEN and still can't do it well... I keep the flush-able wipes for him to use. DD is 3 and still needs some help as well. I figure she tha tis 'normal' DS does haev some developmental delays...

  • Thanks ladies! Since we haven't made it to this age yet with my DD, I didn't know if this was normal, or if I should be charging more for a special needs kid! (He IS a lot of work, but still)

  • Yeah my 3 and 4 year old have issues with wiping their butt. I think at that age they dont realize the importance of it and are in a rush to go back and play. I have known some grown adult men with the same issues though. lol

  • not sure both my kids 6 and 3 have been wiping for sometime now. Niether one of them tells me when they have to go potty they just go. They have been like this ever since they were potty trained. My oldest was 19 months and my youngest at 21 months. So both of them were about 2 when they started not telling me they had to go potty and just going so which means they wiped there own butts

  • Not if you want it clean, when they poop they can't see & reach back there too good, so with my children when they were little i always went behind them and wiped their butts again & got what they left. lol
