  • It's NOT vaccines and that has been scientifically proven. It is something a child is born with, it could happen during fetal developement, it could happen during birth.

How to help a child on the spectrum depends on the level of functioning of the child. Find out the level of functioning and go from there.

  • No one knows the cause yet.

How you can help depends on your relationship to that child and where on the spectrum the child is. As an example: My son is high-functioning. He needs structure and predictability above all, and that's what we do our best to provide.

  • No one knows what causes it. You can get a screening by asking the pediatrician.

  • That is the big mystery. I think it must be genetic. You can help them by getting early therapy.

  • No one knows what causes it, although it's currently believed that genetics are a large part. As far as helping a child on the spectrum, they are all different. It depends on what the individual child needs.

  • Genetics are not the sole source as the one poster speculated. If so there wouldn't be such a dramatic spike in the numbers of children plagued by this in the past few years. There is something environmental that has caused this extreme increase in the condition. No one seems to be finding the answer to the problem. They see too much money in writing books about what they don't know to be bothered with finding the cause then work toward preventative measures.

  • Actually recent research has determined that some of the spike in the autism numbers are that we are aware and testing for it now. In the past alot of children were misdiagnosed and sent to live in institiutiuons. Also high functioning-functioning adults may not even know that they are autistic. (I work with an 42 yr old that was diagnosed last year.) It took us 7 years to diagnose my nephew due to sleep aphnea and his hyperactive nature. He has aspergers and would look you in the eye and smile. Alot of warning signs just weren't there.
