  • A cold sore is a herpes simplex. If there is an irritated red sore around your lip area, and you have had cold sores in the past, chances are that you have another outbreak. Sometimes, with cold sores, the person will notice a pain/tingling for a few days before the spot actually comes out. THAT is the time to use your preventative ointment.

Genital herpes can also occur on the face. That type of outbreak is usually pretty severe and long lasting. People get lesions on the chin, around the mouth and nose. The lesions will be sometimes dark and flat, sometimes yellow . . . it will not look like a normal zit, and the doc should be able to tell it is viral just by looking at it.
