  • I don't think you can be an Atheist or anything else until you can understand things well enough to decide for yourself.

  • Children and babies do not understand the concept so they can't be, but they learn by example though.......

  • DS is 8 and says he is in atheist (not using that exact word, but in his expression of his beliefs when the subject comes up). I ask him why he believes that way, he presents a logical, thought out argument. He knows DH and I are not atheists, and he knows were are not the same religion as many other people, including his aunts, uncles and cousins.

His thought process is entirely logic/proof based. He does not look upon my beliefs as being any better or worse than his, only different. We answer questions as he asks them, but for now, he defines things in terms of possible and not possible, and no religion so far has passed his own personal possibility test. It may be none ever will.

  • People are not born automatically believing in god- they have to learn it.

An Atheist makes a choice to not believe after hearing about god.

So what exactly DO you call a baby that hasn't learned about the concept of god yet? I have no idea...

  • I think we are all born atheist.

Think about it, if religion IS NEVER introduced into your life by someone else, then what???

  • IhartU, I think that would be called an innocent baby. ;-)

  • I agree with IhartU. Religion or lack of is something you are taught.

  • Atehist literally means "Without god". Whether that be because they have heard about the idea and don't believe or simply were never taught about it, because there is no god in their lives they are Atheist by the very definition of the term. That said YES Children and babies especially can be and are Atheists.
