What is a normal amount of money to spend on groceries per week for a family with one child??

my SO and i are practically arguing about this...he says $400 a month is normal, and i think it's way too much. even just ten years ago my family of EIGHT was living off $100/wk...which was obviously real tight, but i think if we're smart we can budget 300-350/month for groceries...

so does any one else have any ideas/opinions? anything would be useful, thanks!

  • I was going to say about $100 a week, so yeah, $400 a month seems about right. But I honestly think if we tried, we could do $350 or even $300 if we really planned out meals and bought when things were on sale.

  • We buy a lot of organic and free range food so a month we spend any where between 500 to 650. We are a family of 4. I am trying to cut it down. We just had 2 new farmer's market stores open in our city so hopefully next month we can get our budget down to 450.

  • I think you are right! 6 years ago it was me my ex boyfriend and my 3 year old son COULD live on 60-80 a week. I took advantage of admatch for buying expensive necessities like milk and meat because you rarely find coupons for those items, I always made a list before we went and I took a calculator. If we were under budget after we got everything on the list then we would buy things like cookies or soda but yeah we def. had no problem living on 300-350 amonth. Oh and that was even feeding his 3 daughters 2 weekends a month.
If he wants to spend 400 then it sounds like he is wanting the processed convenience foods that are like pizza rolls and tv dinners.
