When did doctors start doing ultrasounds on pregnant women and printing them out?

I was born in the 70's and I don't remember seeing them until my nieces were born about 12 years ago. I googled it but no luck.

  • I don't know what exact year, but I think you're in the right time frame - somewhere in the 80's? I have a brother who was born in 1980 and I remember my mom having one ultrasound picture printed out and it's in his baby book. It was just one (not like how they print out a bunch nowadays) and I definitely don't think it was a common practice then...

  • They did it in the 70's it just wasn't common. My husband has the ultrasound of his brother and sister (well, at least one of them.) they were both were still born.

  • According to this article   comercial machines became available in 1963 and by the late 70's ultrasounds became a routine part of obstetric care.
