Chronic coating on tongue

This is gross, but I've always had a whitish coating on my tongue toward the back of my mouth - it doesn't really brush off, and it's always there... I've just started to wonder if it's related to some sort of food allergy or immune system weakness or something along those lines. Does anybody have any ideas of what it could be or where I could start looking for answers? No bashing please!
