  • By definition, a cult is a small subgroup that branches off from a larger group. Each size has a name (trying to remember a Sociology class from a very long time ago) cult, sect, denomination, religion, from smallest to largest. I may have cult and sect reversed there. Over time, the term has been twisted to be pejorative, because when a smaller group breaks off from a larger, it's common for the larger group to denounce the smaller one to try and scare people away from it.

    by popular definition: a fringe group whose members lives are controlled by one leader & often end in tragic circumstances. members are often abused sexually, physically, and mentally.
