When can baby eat finger food?

I was wondering, since my son is getting his top teeth and 7 and half months. When can I give him some finger food? If I can, what kind of finger food to start?

  • Cheerios are always good. It's bet to give them finger foods when they're able to make a pincher with their thumb and index fingers.

  • Whenever he's physically ready for solids (i.e., sitting unsupported, use of the pincer grasp, loss of the tongue thrust reflex, etc.). My second didn't start solids at all until 7.5 months, and she went straight to table foods at that point. Teeth don't matter at all; if it's easily mushable between your fingers, he can mush it with his gums.

Google "baby led solids". Easiest thing every. :)

  • I started giving my DD finger food at 8 months, with the Gerber Graduates stuff for Crawlers.

  • Whenever he/she can maneuver getting the food into their mouths, Cheerios are the best! You can also give them whatever veggies or fruits you are having, cut up small - my little ones loved beans/peas and they were just the right size.

  • You can start with table foods, pureed, mashed or cut up bite size, but that's usually not recommended to do until at least 6 mos. At 7 mos, I think it's fine to offer.

  • Banana, avocado, sweet potato, just cut it up small, and bake the potato first.
