Kabobs. What do you usually use when making them?

My step son's come over every weekend with their kiddos and wives to bbq with us. It's a fun tradition we do year around. Well, they suggested kabobs for next time. I've never made them. What kind do you like and any recommendations on grilling them?

  • Get the metal skewers (at least 2 per person). I do the veggies on separate skewers from the meats because the meats take longer to cook than the veggies do and sometimes the veggies get overcooked. Here is what we typicall use:

Veggies: zucchini chunks (about 1" thick), small whole mushrooms, cherry tomatoes, bell pepper chunks, onion wedges
Fruit: (fruit kabobs make a YUMMY dessert); Pineapple, peaches, plums, bananas, cut into 1" chunks, whole strawberries (glaze with a mixture of lime juice and honey and its really yummy)
Meats: (marinate in your favorite marinade): steak chunks, boneless chicken breast chunks, shrimp

  • I made them a couple weeks ago for the kids. I used wooden sticks (soak them first) but honestly, they got all burnt any way. I saw a set at Ocean State Job Lot for $5 and it was metal, so if you intend to do this more than once, it might be a good investment.

I used chicken chunks, red peppers, mushrooms, pineapples and onions. The kids picked what they wanted and ate that.

  • I have metal kabob sticks and we use chicken, you can also use steak. For veggies we get green peppers, red peppers, onions, pineapple, mushrooms :) And we marinade them in this sauce called Hawaiian laua. YYYUUUMMM!!!

  • I think you need more than 2 per person. We do our meat in 1 inch cubes and it is done and the veggies get a little black on the edges which is how we like them. We usually make about 4 or 5 per person but it depends on what sides you have and how much meat you put on each one.

  • We have a variety of ingredients and let everyone build their own.

I usually put out: steak, chicken, pineapple, onion, peppers, zucchini, mushrooms, tomatoes
