Are racoons harmful ?

The last week I noticed that we have raccoons going through our back yard and near our daughters swimming pool. Are they harmful or carry disease?

I'm researching about them now, but just wanted to know if anyone on here has any experience with raccoons.

  • There are raccoons in our area, and just like any wild animal, they can be dangerous. They do carry a particularly nasty parasite, and of course, raiding your garbage at night isn't particularly sanitary. Where they're most troublesome is with regard to pets-- cats and small dogs in particular. Raccoons are aggressive fighters when they have to be, and have been known to stand their ground and cause some serious damage. Most of the time they run away, but I'd keep my cat indoors at night. And keep your garbage secure.

  • I know they can be mean. They aren't timid if cornered. And they can carry rabies.

  • They are dangerous because not only are they mean and quite vicious but they also harbor many diseases, like any wild animal.
