Wheelchair resources?

I have had Multiple Sclerosis for twenty years and have been completely disabled since 1999. I also just went through my third spinal surgery last month. My Neurologist gave me a prescription for a wheelchair - however I can't seem to get it covered and paid for. I have Medicare and MaineCare! I live in an apartment and do not have an outside ramp - so nobody will help me get a wheelchair. I can get around a little with 2 steel crutches - but feel that it would be greatly beneficial to have a wheelchair for inside my home and to take with me if I have to go somewhere that I would have to walk too much! I'm starting to feel like a prisoner in my home because of my lack of mobility and am very frustrated! Can anyone tell me of a way to obtain a wheelchair (either covered by my insurances or donated or affordable)? Any websites that might help me?

  • Start with these... if you call them and they can't help, ask them to direct you to someone who can. Sometimes they know about programs and services that are hard to find.

  • You live in an apartment - sounds like you need to scream ADA to your landlord and get him to put a damn ramp in. If you have a prescription, you need to jump and scream and yell and get it covered....try hoverround or another big name company to see if they can help. Also try the National MS Society and see if they can advocate for you.

  • I'm also sure Maine has a department that deals with rights, etc for disabled people... but I can't think of it right now... I am sure they can help. Let me do some digging!!
