Anybody have some good tips on how to house train a puppy???

It's not as easy as I'd hoped.

  • We "crate trained" our puppy. Try it. Buy a crate that is comfortable, big enough and keep the puppy in the crate ,then take it out often to go potty outside. They will learn to hold it because they never pee in their own space(The crate) There are instructions at pet shops and online...Crate training is great! Then when you go somewhere you can leave the puppy in his crate and he will feel comfy and not have any accidents ....

  • Yell at them when you see them go in your house. When you see them go outside praise them, give them a treat.

  • Patience and persistence. It is good to kennel train them at 1st. They do not like to go in their kennels. Take them out right away when they come out and praise them for going "good boy or girl". It is also important to get the scent out from the place they went. Bissell makes a great pet steam cleaner and spray. It costs about $200.00 but is worth every penney. If you use paper towel when you clean up their accident, you can toss it outside and their scent make it easier when they are put outside the next times. It takes awhile, but give them alot of attention and praise when they go outside. They usually go poo about 20 minutes after eating, let them run around for awhile and wetting is frequent when they are little. Just keep putting them out. Good luck. :-)

  • We gave our puppy water and then about 20 minutes later, took him outside until he went. And, we hung an old jingle bell on the door and rang it everytime we went outside and the dog learned to ring it when he wanted to go out. Good luck!
