Do you say "Ma'am" and "Sir"?

Blame it on my southern roots, but I seem to be nearly compulsive about ma'am-ing and sir-ing.

The guy who holds the door for me at the store, "Thank you, sir!"

The lady next to an open computer at the courthouse, "Excuse me, ma'am, do you know if anyone is using this computer?"

Do you say "ma'am" and/or "sir"? And in what situations?

  • Yes and our schools down here still teach the children to say it. I say it all the time if I don't know someone's name or I call them hun (blame that on Georgia!). Texas is pretty awesome about manners in small town schools like ours

  • Yes I do, living in the South. I haven't lived here all my life, so I mostly use them when talking to strangers.
