What do you think of Operation Fast and Furious?

Top Republican lawmakers have authored an explosive new letter containing details of secret testimony by acting ATF Director Kenneth Melson, which reveal for the first time the extent to which his agency was involved in an international gun selling scandal.

House Oversight Committee Chairman Rep. Darrell Issa, California Republican, and Sen. Chuck Grassley, Iowa Republican, fired off the letter to Attorney General Eric Holder Tuesday detailing what Melson told Congressional investigators in a secret July 4 testimony.

One key takeaway from the meeting was that Melson acknowledged to investigators that agents had witnessed transfers of weapons from straw purchasers to third parties without following the guns afterwards. Straw purchasers are people who could technically legally buy guns in the U.S. but their intent was to turn around and sell them to drug cartels in Mexico.

Another point Melson clarified for investigators was that the ATF group carrying out the mission of Operation Fast and Furious was placed under the direction of the Arizona U.S. Attorney’s office. The U.S. Attorney in Arizona, Dennis Burke, is a political appointee of the Obama administration.

Melson abandoned DOJ representation after learning of a provision in his agreement to testify that allowed him to do so. (Issa staffer: Gunrunner investigation points much higher than ATF director)

  • I have a feeling a lot of people won't realize what a big deal this actually is (Iran Contra, anyone?) And, I fear it will be buried under the mess of the party girl who shall not be named, because righteous indignation usually trumps actual concern for things that matter.

  • Wow. When will Republicans learn to play by this administration's rules? Isn't this the sort of thing to keep under wraps for an October Surprise? It will be well forgotten by election time.

  • The real question that remains is 'what will Holder do with this?'. My guess is nothing.

Former El Paso Intelligence Center (EPIC) director Phil Jordan said he thinks this scandal goes as high as Attorney General Eric Holder. From his decades of law enforcement experience working with Washington-based Justice Department officials, Jordan said he’s sure this kind of program would have needed approval from either the Attorney General or one of his direct deputies.

  • But precisely what weapons are we supplying the cartels? A Pajamas Media investigation found the weaponry seized from cartels that can only come from the U.S. government, which is trying to shift the blame to American small businessmen.

  • This all about $$$$- back turning, supplying items to the wrong people- it all boils down to money. Legalize, regulate and tax the hell out of the drugs- End the BS on the borders, and let the US or individual states financially profit- It just makes good economic and emotional sense-

    Alcohol, cigarettes, pharmaceuticals.......what's the difference?

Today on this forum is similar to the Casey Anthony defense case...throw anything/topic up against the wall to just distract from the biggest CURRENT event in the media. If it's an obsession, there's a whole country of sick people.

  • I think it's almost too crazy to believe. It seem like the planning was soooooooooo poor. n fact, it seems like there was no plan, like they just acted on an idea.
