What's the going rate for a babysitter?

I live in a small farm town and have always had family watch my DD(7), but needed to ask the little sister of one of my friends to watch her 2nite. She's 18 and she has to drive here so I want to make it worth it for her, but I'm a single mom so I can't afford to overpay KWIM?

I just have no idea what the range is.

  • I pay $5 an hour when we use a babysitter, whether it's because I have to work or because we are going out.

  • no one gives me a good answer when I ask but when we lived in a small town, I paid by age jr. high - 7.00 an hr and I usually had to drive home.
Highschool $8 an hour. College $9.00. Now in a big city and $10 seems to be the going rate. I think that is a bit crazy myself but I also want occational sanity.
