  • If he is only doing a weekend a month the amount is more like $300 per month and two weeks a year. Either he misunderstood the recruiter or he is looking at something other than the Navy reserves. Google Navy Reservist pay and you will see paycharts for his paygrade and how many days he is active how much he will get paid. It would be a good way to earn some extra income and learn new skills but I doubt that a reservist is going to get a college fund from the navy, but depending on length of service he would be eligible for the GI Bill which pays for full time enrollment for up to 36 months. After 8 weeks of bootcamp you would be allowed to move to be near him and would be able to see him on the weekends and after school so that wouldn't be so bad, but you both should talk to the recruiter and review the enlistment papers carefully.

  • He has to enlist and be active duty to get that kind of money. They do not give you 80 thousand in one lump sum, they pay for his schooling and his budget is 80000, if he goes over that then he's cut off. Reserves you'll only make maaaaybe a 1/4 of what you'd make if you were active duty.

  • That kind of money meaning 2000 a month. Tell him to talk to a recruiter or go to a different office and talk to a recruiter in a different office. Recruiters WILL sugarcoat and borderline lie to get you to enlist. As long as they get their numbers they don't really care.

  • Yup he needs to active for that. Navy reserves you're lucky to get 300 a month. He does get a GI Bill (money to pay for college) but its no 80G

  • Yep, these ladies are right. My son doesn't make quite that much and he's an active duty Marine stationed in Japan right now. Plus, he's a lance corporal...so those numbers are way off. Marine wife is right about recruiters sugarcoating stuff too. My advice is to do some in-depth research before signing on that dotted line.

  • My son was told the same thing when he talked to a Marine recruter (sp).

So he signed up without telling us (knew how i would take it, i guess) went to basic and was home 2 weeks when his unit got orders to ship out to afghanistan. had to leave the day before his birthday. won't be home (perm) for another 10 months.
